I want to describe {PERSON}, an art and history teacher who taught me more than
one skill. I met her at twelve, in a course in an old museum in {CITY}. She
was good at making things by hand, but what impressed me most was her ability
to connect a small object with a larger story.

On day one, she showed us how to make a shadow puppet from card, bamboo and
coloured paper. Rather than giving us a perfect model to copy, she asked us to
research a historical character and design a puppet that matched its
personality. I chose a travelling doctor from the Song dynasty. My first
puppet collapsed because I used too much glue. {PERSON} calmly helped me
reinforce the joints, then asked what the character might have seen on the
road. Suddenly, history stopped feeling like a list of dates.

Over six weeks, she taught us to sketch, cut, speak clearly and explain our
choices. She also encouraged us to learn a few phrases in {LANGUAGE}, because
museums welcome visitors from everywhere. At the exhibition, I gave a
bilingual introduction beside my puppet. My voice shook, but the audience
stayed attentive, and one child asked to make a puppet too.

I still remember that afternoon because the course changed my attitude to
learning. {PERSON} showed me that a new skill becomes memorable when hands,
imagination and the mind work together. Whenever a subject feels dull, I now
look for a story or a small project. She taught me curiosity, not merely
craft.

  • 感受: history stopped feeling like dates;把技能连接到 curiosity。

  1. What impressed me most was her ability to connect...
  2. Rather than giving us a model, she asked us to design...
  3. My first puppet collapsed, which nearly made me give up.
  4. She taught us to sketch, cut and explain our choices.
  5. Whenever a subject feels dull, I look for a story or a project.

Part 3

① Why should children learn new skills?

New skills give children immediate feedback and a sense of agency.

② Should children learn history early?

History becomes meaningful when children can connect a past life with their own.

③ How do adults learn a new skill?

可用 deliberate practice、small but consistent steps 和 learn from mistakes。

④ Why are some classes boring?
