Well, I'd like to talk about {HELPER}, my flatmate Leo, who solved a problem in a really smart way——the night my laptop died just before a deadline. While I panicked with sweat gathering on my palms, he stayed completely calm; he suggested swapping in his own charger, and when the machine sprang back to life, he had already handed me his spare laptop without me even asking. Watching him work, I realised that smart problem-solving is never about brilliance——it is about staying calm, testing one variable at a time, and always keeping a plan B ready. That is why I think his approach was so clever.

  1. 时间背景前置句(开头一次铺好背景):It was around 23:15 on a rainy Friday night, when my internship report was due at midnight.
  2. 独立主格结构(动作 + 身体反应同框):I panicked for a few minutes, sweat gathering on my palms.
  3. 否定转折(从崩溃到行动):Instead of giving up, I forced myself to troubleshoot step by step.
  4. 对仗式金句(结尾升华):Panic only narrows your options, while steady thinking widens them.
  5. 倒装强调(转折点画面感):Then came the real miracle: he handed me his spare laptop. → "Then came + 名词"倒装,比 Then he gave me...

(Traffic & Congestion)

Q1: How should traffic jams be solved?

I'd argue the answer is a package of measures rather than one magic fix —— better public transport, carpooling, flexible working hours and smarter traffic lights, because if you try only one thing, the congestion simply moves elsewhere. Having said that, no city has ever eliminated jams completely —— the realistic goal is to shorten them.

提分表达:a package of measures / a magic fix / divert people away from private cars

Q2: Is developing public transport useful?

Absolutely. A bus or train carries dozens of people in the space one car occupies, so improving public transport is the fastest way to relieve congestion —— provided it's frequent, affordable and reaches the suburbs, otherwise people simply won't give up their cars. Admittedly, in small towns with low population density, building a metro is simply not worth the money.

提分表达:relieve congestion / reach the suburbs / give up one's car / population density

Q3: Can building more highways reduce traffic jams?

Only in the short run, I'm afraid. Wider roads attract more cars —— a phenomenon called induced demand: build a new motorway, and within a few years it's just as gridlocked as before. That said, highways still help move freight and long-distance traffic, so they aren't useless.

提分表达:in the short run / induced demand / gridlocked

Q4: How should city traffic be managed?

Cities need smart management: congestion charging for the busiest zones, staggered working hours, and data-driven traffic lights that adapt to real-time flow —— because managing demand matters more than endlessly expanding supply. Of course, charging schemes must protect low-income drivers, or the poor end up paying the price.

提分表达:congestion charging / staggered working hours / data-driven / real-time flow

(Devices, AI & Phones)

Q5: Why do people love buying new electronic devices?

Partly marketing and partly identity: companies release new models every year, and owning the latest device makes people feel productive and fashionable —— even though their old one still works perfectly well. Having said that, some upgrades are genuinely necessary, like for work or security updates.

提分表达:release new models / feel productive and fashionable / works perfectly well

Q6: What impact do electronic devices have on people?

They're a double-edged sword: on one hand they multiply our efficiency and connect us instantly; on the other, we're increasingly distracted —— checking our screens dozens of times a day and struggling to focus on a single task. Of course, the device itself is neutral —— it all depends on how we use it.

提分表达:a double-edged sword / multiply our efficiency / struggle to focus

Q7: What are the pros and cons of AI? / Q10: How does AI help us?

On balance, AI brings enormous convenience: it translates instantly, drafts documents, helps diagnose diseases and personalises learning, saving us hours every week. The downside is that it can make us lazy and dependent, and it threatens some routine jobs. Having said that, I believe AI creates as many new jobs as it removes —— provided we adapt and keep learning.

提分表达:enormous convenience / personalise learning / make us lazy and dependent / on balance

Q8: Should people today learn AI skills? / Q9: Should children learn to use AI?

For adults, a basic understanding of AI is almost unavoidable now, because it's entering every profession, from medicine to law. For children, the goal is slightly different: they should definitely learn to use it, but under supervision —— they need to grasp both its power and its limits before relying on it too heavily. Admittedly, tool skills matter less than judgement —— knowing when to trust AI is the real ability.

提分表达:almost unavoidable / under supervision / rely on it too heavily / critical thinking

Q23: How do young people and elderly people use mobile phones differently?

Young people treat the phone as an extension of themselves —— chatting, filming, gaming and shopping all day long; the elderly mainly use it as a practical tool to keep in touch, check the weather or pay bills. Interestingly, the gap is narrowing, as more grandparents enjoy short videos nowadays.

提分表达:an extension of oneself / a practical tool / keep in touch / the generation gap

Q24: What are the positive and negative effects of phones on friendship?

Phones keep distant friendships alive and make plans effortless, but they can also cheapen relationships —— people sit physically together yet stare at their own screens, texting strangers while ignoring the friends beside them. That said, used wisely, a phone is just a tool; the real problem is the way we use it.

提分表达:keep friendships alive / cheapen relationships / physically together but digitally apart

Q25: Is taking photos a waste of time?

Not at all, as long as it serves a purpose. Photos freeze moments we would otherwise forget and help us share experiences; the real waste is photographing everything compulsively instead of living in the moment. Of course, there's a fine line between recording memories and hiding behind the camera.

提分表达:freeze moments / live in the moment / a fine line

Q26: Should phone use be regulated by law?

Only up to a point. Laws clearly make sense for road safety —— banning phones while driving is absolutely right —— but beyond that, self-discipline and education beat legislation, because you can't police every screen. Some would argue schools should legally ban phones, and I partly agree —— but that's a school rule, not a national law.

提分表达:up to a point / road safety / self-discipline / you can't police every screen

(Teamwork, Leadership & Being Influenced)

Q11: Why do some people prefer working alone?

Some people work best alone because they can focus deeply, control their own pace and take full credit for the result —— team projects often mean endless meetings and diluted responsibility. Granted, solitude suits certain tasks, but big modern problems almost always require cooperation in the end.

提分表达:focus deeply / control one's own pace / diluted responsibility

Q12: What should leaders do?

A good leader doesn't do everything themselves; they set a clear direction, divide tasks according to people's strengths, listen before deciding, and above all lead by example —— because a team mirrors its leader's attitude. Of course, leadership styles vary, but the principle of serving the team stays the same.

提分表达:set a clear direction / divide tasks according to strengths / lead by example

Q13: Should students learn teamwork at school? / Q14: What group tasks do students do?

Definitely. School is the safest place to practise cooperation: students do science experiments, class presentations, sports and drama projects together, learning to negotiate, share and take responsibility —— soft skills that exams simply can't measure. That said, competition still matters, so schools should balance individual and group work.

提分表达:practise cooperation / share and take responsibility / soft skills

Q27: Should children make important decisions? / Q28: What decisions do teenagers make after graduation?

It depends on maturity. Small children can decide trivial things like what to wear; adolescents should gradually take on real decisions —— choosing subjects, universities, or whether to study abroad after graduation —— with parents acting as advisors, not bosses. Admittedly, some decisions are too heavy for the young, like big financial ones, where adults must step in.

提分表达:with parents acting as advisors / foster independence / make an informed choice

Q29: Who do children turn to for help with decisions?

Mostly their parents, because they know them best and trust them most, but friends and teachers play a growing role —— especially for teenagers, who often value peer opinions over parental advice. Interestingly, many teens now also compare online reviews, which is useful but not always reliable.

提分表达:turn to sb for help / value peer opinions / weigh the options

Q30: Do advertisements influence people's shopping decisions?

Hugely, though often unconsciously. Ads create desire by linking products to status or happiness —— we rarely buy purely because we need something; we buy because an image convinced us, which is exactly why influencer marketing is so effective. Of course, rational shoppers compare prices and reviews, so the influence is not absolute.

提分表达:create desire / link products to status / influencer marketing / unconsciously

(Choosing Your Vehicle)

Q15: Which is better, an electric bicycle or a normal bicycle?

It depends on the terrain and distance. For a few flat kilometres, a normal bike is healthier, lighter and cheaper; an e-bike wins for hilly cities, long commutes or sweaty summer rides, because it removes the physical barrier that stops people cycling at all. Having said that, e-bikes are pricier, heavier and need charging, so they aren't a universal answer.

提分表达:remove the physical barrier / hilly terrain / a universal answer

Q16: Will electric vehicles replace bicycles?

No, I doubt it. They serve different purposes: bikes are for short trips, exercise and fun, while cars —— electric or not —— carry families and cargo over long distances, and in crowded cities the bike is often faster anyway. Of course, in some car-centric countries bicycles have been pushed off the streets, which is exactly why we should protect cycling infrastructure.

提分表达:serve different purposes / cycling infrastructure / car-centric

Q17: Electric cars or petrol cars?

For the environment, electric cars are clearly the future —— they produce no exhaust fumes and cost far less to run, so I'd choose one if I could afford it. The catch is that charging is still slower and less convenient than filling a tank, and the upfront price is higher. In the meantime, hybrids may be a more practical stepping stone for most families.

提分表达:exhaust fumes / a real catch / the upfront price / a stepping stone

(Blackouts, Fixing Things & Handmade Goods)

Q18: How did people live without electricity in ancient times?

They simply lived with the rhythm of nature: they woke at sunrise, worked by daylight, and at night gathered around candles or fireplaces for stories and music —— which, ironically, made evenings far more social than ours. Obviously, life was harder in many ways —— no refrigeration, no convenient heating —— but the point is that humans adapted perfectly well.

提分表达:live with the rhythm of nature / gather around the fire / ironically / adapt

Q19: What things at home easily break?

Usually the cheap or moving parts: phone chargers, headphones, drawer handles, taps and kettles —— anything electrical or mechanical that we use constantly, because heavy use wears components out far faster than we expect. Interestingly, well-made older appliances often outlast modern ones, which suggests quality matters more than brand.

提分表达:wear out / heavy use / outlast / quality over brand

Q20: What kind of people like repairing things themselves?

They tend to be curious, patient and a little frugal —— they enjoy understanding how things work, they save money by fixing instead of replacing, and they take genuine pride in a job done with their own hands. Of course, DIY isn't for everything —— complex electronics still usually need professionals.

提分表达:with one's own hands / hands-on / take pride in / DIY

Q21: Are factory-made clothes better than handmade ones? / Q22: Are handmade clothes more valuable?

Factory clothes win on price, consistency and speed, while handmade clothes win on uniqueness, fit and quality —— which is why they cost more and are often treasured for years, even generations. Having said that, mass production has its downsides, from textile waste to poor conditions in some factories.

提分表达:uniqueness / a perfect fit / treasured for generations / mass production
